The Outstanding Young Men of 2008 (TOYM)
The Philippine Jaycees, Inc. awarded Dr. Christian Joseph R. Cumagun, Professor 1 at the CA-Crop Protection Cluster and CA associate dean, as one of The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) for 2008. Cumagun is one of five who recently joined over 400 awardees who made the final cut to the prestigious and highly competitive award since it was first given in 1959.

In his Philippine Daily Inquirer column, Mapping the Future, Ambassador Albert del Rosario, chair of the TOYM board of judges, said that Dr. Cumagun is one of the country’s most accomplished experts in agricultural science of his generation. Dr. Cumagun was the first to molecularly characterize Philippine Trichoderma strains, a biocontrol agent fungus against several plant pathogens, as a means of reducing pesticide use in agriculture.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo presented the award to the 2008 TOYM in ceremonies at the Malacañang Palace on Dec. 20. Dr. Cumagun was appointed to the rank of UP Scientist I in 2008 and was named one of the Outstanding Young Scientists by the National Academy of
Science and Technology in 2007. His work on Fusarium, a fungus which contaminates
economically important food crops such as rice, corn and wheat is considered by his colleagues at the US Department of Agriculture as “among the most interesting genetic work on Fusarium to date.”
